5 Films About Information Security

July 17, 2016

At Skynet, we have a passion for keeping our customers safe and sound. When we aren’t thinking about security in the real-world, we like to dive into films that explore the wild possibilities of information security. Here are a few of our favorites.

The Net

This one is a classic (in our minds anyway). Sandra Bullock plays Angela Bennett, a computer programmer who uncovers a conspiracy and ends up paying dearly. Her identity is erased, and she finds herself on the run from invisible criminals. This one will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Minority Report

Tom Cruise plays an officer of the law in the year 2054. Law enforcement technology has vastly improved, and police are able to stop crimes before they are committed, but at what cost? Society is under constant surveillance, and while safety has risen and crime rates have shrunken significantly, there are lots of questions about invasion of privacy and other pertinent topics explored in this action-packed film.

Hackers

A group of mischievous teens, skilled at hacking into computer systems and implanting viruses, becomes wrapped up in something much more sinister. They ultimately uncover a plot to unleash a devastating virus and end up running from the secret service as they try to stop the plot and clear their names.

Office Space

The first three films on this list are quite serious. This one, however, doesn’t follow that script. A group of disgruntled office workers plots revenge against a company that plans to lay them off from their jobs. A plot is hatched to hack into computers and steal loads of cash. Hilarity ensues, and the effort just becomes a mess. It’s definitely a film to keep on your must-see list.

The Matrix

What’s more out-of-this-world in the information security realm than hacking into someone’s brain? Neo, played by Keanu Reeves, uncovers the truth about his world and finds that what he thinks is reality is really programming created by machines that have taken over the world. And the best part is, this could actually be reality and we’d never know! Let’s hope not, though.

If you haven’t seen any of these amazing films, we encourage you to check them out. And if you have information security needs, we are happy to chat. Although, we can’t help you with mind control, so let’s leave that to Neo.
